Just 12 miles north of San Francisco, Muir Woods National Monument stands as one of the last remaining old-growth coastal redwood forests on Earth. The main Cathedral Grove loop draws thousands of visitors daily, but Muir Woods connects to over 60 miles of trails in Mount Tamalpais State Park. Most tourists never venture beyond the paved main trail — which means the real magic is just a few steps off the beaten path.

The Cathedral Grove at dawn, before the shuttle buses arrive, is one of the most peaceful places on Earth. Arrive by 7am and you may have the entire grove to yourself. The morning mist rolls in from the Pacific, wrapping the ancient trunks in silver fog while banana slugs make their slow pilgrimage across the trail. In winter, the creek runs high and the sound of rushing water fills the canyon. In spring, trillium and redwood sorrel carpet the forest floor in white and green.

Muir Woods is home to a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Coho salmon and steelhead trout spawn in Redwood Creek each winter. Roosevelt elk occasionally wander down from the surrounding hills. Spotted owls nest in the old-growth canopy, and the rare marbled murrelet can sometimes be heard calling at dawn. The forest floor is a world unto itself: nurse logs host entire ecosystems of ferns, fungi, and seedling redwoods that will outlive everyone alive today.
