Zion National Park

Utah's Cathedral of Stone — The Ultimate 2026 Guide

229 sq miles · 4.5M+ visitors/year · Elevation: 3,666–8,726 ft

Zion National Park is one of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. Towering sandstone cliffs in shades of red, orange, and white rise thousands of feet above the Virgin River, creating a canyon so awe-inspiring that early settlers believed it was a divine sanctuary. Whether you're hiking Angels Landing, wading through The Narrows, or simply watching the sunset paint the canyon walls gold — Zion will leave you speechless.

Top Hikes in Zion

Angels Landing

Distance: 5.4 miles RT
Elevation gain: 1,488 ft
Difficulty: Strenuous
Permit required: Yes

The most iconic hike in Zion. The final half-mile involves chains bolted into the rock as you traverse a narrow ridge with 1,000-foot drops on both sides. The view from the top is absolutely worth it.

The Narrows

Distance: Up to 16 miles
Elevation gain: Minimal
Difficulty: Moderate
Permit required: Bottom-up: No

Wade through the Virgin River as canyon walls close to just 20 feet wide above you. One of the most unique hiking experiences in the world. Waterproof boots or rental canyoneering shoes are essential.

Emerald Pools Trail

Distance: 1.2–3 miles
Elevation gain: 350 ft
Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
Permit required: No

Three stunning pools fed by waterfalls cascading off the canyon walls. The upper pool is the most dramatic. Perfect for families and those wanting a shorter, scenic hike.

Canyon Overlook Trail

Distance: 1 mile RT
Elevation gain: 163 ft
Difficulty: Easy
Permit required: No

The best bang-for-buck hike in Zion. A short, mostly flat trail leads to a breathtaking overlook of Zion Canyon. Perfect for sunrise or sunset photography.

Observation Point

Distance: 8 miles RT
Elevation gain: 2,148 ft
Difficulty: Strenuous
Permit required: No

The highest viewpoint in Zion — and arguably the best. You look DOWN at Angels Landing from here. A grueling climb but the panoramic views of the entire canyon are unmatched.

Riverside Walk

Distance: 2.2 miles RT
Elevation gain: 57 ft
Difficulty: Easy
Permit required: No

A paved, accessible trail along the Virgin River that leads to the start of The Narrows. Beautiful canyon walls, hanging gardens, and wildlife. Great for all ages and abilities.
