Olympic National Park: The Ultimate Guide + Gear List 2026

Olympic National Park

Washington's Three-World Wonder — The Ultimate 2026 Guide

922,000 acres · Rainforest + Coast + Mountains · UNESCO World Heritage Site

Olympic National Park is unlike any other park in America — it contains three completely different ecosystems within its borders. Ancient temperate rainforests draped in moss, a wild and rugged Pacific coastline with sea stacks and tide pools, and glacier-capped mountain peaks rising above it all. It's a park that rewards slow exploration and rewards those who venture off the beaten path.

Essential Olympic Facts for 2026

  • Location: Olympic Peninsula, Washington State — 2.5 hours from Seattle
  • Best time to visit: July–September for mountains; year-round for rainforest and coast
  • Rainfall: Hoh Rainforest receives 140–170 inches of rain per year
  • Entrance fee: $35/vehicle (7-day pass)
  • Must-see: Hoh Rainforest, Hurricane Ridge, Rialto Beach, Sol Duc Falls
  • Wildlife: Roosevelt elk, black bears, mountain goats, sea otters, orcas offshore

Top Experiences in Olympic

Hoh Rainforest

Type: Temperate rainforest
Key trail: Hall of Mosses (0.8 mi)
Difficulty: Easy

One of the most otherworldly places in the US. Ancient maple trees draped in thick green moss create a cathedral-like canopy. The Hall of Mosses trail is short but absolutely unforgettable — like walking through a fairy tale.

Hurricane Ridge

Type: Alpine meadows
Elevation: 5,242 ft
Difficulty: Easy (drive-up)

Drive to the top for panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. In summer, wildflower meadows bloom and black-tailed deer graze near the visitor center. In winter, it's a ski area.

Rialto Beach & Hole-in-the-Wall

Type: Wild Pacific coast
Distance: 3 miles RT
Difficulty: Easy

A dramatic stretch of wild Pacific coastline with sea stacks, driftwood, and tide pools. At low tide, walk through the natural rock arch called Hole-in-the-Wall. One of the most dramatic coastal walks in America.
